The Best Photo Editing Apps for Your Phone

As a photographer, I make it a point to keep up with the best photo editing apps to ensure I can edit my photos in the highest quality. As smartphone cameras evolve and rival professional DSLRs, I take more and more photos on my phone. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll never abandon my Nikon, but it’s nice to have options when you’re out and about. Without further ado, here are the best photo editing apps I have on my phone from one tap fixes to in-depth creative effects!

Best photo editing apps for your smartphone.

1. Lightroom

Lightroom is great for both beginners and advanced photo editors. One tap presets allow you to edit photos in seconds, but you also have access to more advanced tools to adjust color, exposure, detail and more. Keep in mind you have to have an Adobe subscription to access premium features, but this is my go-to fave! If you have Creative Cloud, you can easily sync all of your photos for easy access across devices!

*This app is available for free for IOS and Android, though a subscription is required for premium access.

2. Afterlight 2

Afterlight can also be a super powerful or very simple photo editor. With a process similar to batch editing in Photoshop, “fusion” allows you to create a set of actions you can apply to multiple photos.

*This app is available for $2.99 for IOS and Android.

3. Snapseed

Snapseed is super easy to use with a selection of super powerful editing tools. You can do anything from adjusting exposure to removing unwanted objects. This mobile app is great for iPhoneography whether you are just beginning or an experienced photographer! Unlike most apps, Snapseed does not have in-app purchases, so you can rest assured you will not spend money using this app!

*This app is available for free for IOS and Android.

4. VSCO

VSCO is best known for its preset filters. You can find a plethora of VSCO inspired presets on Pinterest and Instagram to help you find the best theme for your photography. People spend so much time adjusting filter settings to create beautiful themes for their Instagram feeds AND they share them with the public. Take advantage of these filters and create a unique vintage-inspired look for your photos!

*This app is available for free for IOS and Android.

5. Huji

Huji is the best app for channeling your inner retro. From light leaks to time stamps, Huji uses vintage disposable camera qualities to create old-school images.

6. Superimpose X

Superimpose X is my favorite app for more creative editing features. You can create surrealistic images using editing techniques such as double exposure. With the ability to fine-tune image edits specific to layers, you can produce high-quality images that look like they went through Adobe Photoshop.

*This app is available for $4.99 for IOS.

7. Perfect365

To be honest, I only use Perfect365 if I need to whiten teeth, but let me tell you, this is the best app for teeth whitening if you need to do it on your phone or on the fly. You can easily upload a photo and whiten teeth (be mindful that you do not over whiten because it is very easy to do so.) With that being said, you can save the photos in high resolution for free if you watch a short video ad.

*This app is available for free for IOS and Android.

8. Plotaverse

Plotaverse helps you create motion graphics images out of any photo you want. This app offers the highest resolution social network sharing out there. You can create the most hypnotizing images with Plotaverse, which makes this app one of the most popular from personal use to business use. No wonder it made Facebook’s Top 10 Apps list!

9. Planoly

Planoly isn’t just a photo editor. Planoly is the ultimate Instagram app. With the ability to lay out your grid and arrange photos in the most eye-pleasing ways, this app allows you to schedule out posts ahead of time and create different groups of hashtags, ensuring that you absolutely slay the Insta game.

10. Enlight

Enlight offers both traditional and more artistic editing tools. Going beyond simple color and exposure editing, Enlight allows you to transform any photo into a drawing or painting, or you can apply the effects to specific parts of your image using the Mask tool. This is a more complicated app to use, but with a little trial and error, you can master the tools in no time!

*This app is available for $3.99 for IOS.

11. TouchRetouch

TouchRetouch is similar to Perfect365 in that it offers a multitude of tools to remove blemishes and unwanted objects from your photos. Though many apps offer this ability, TouchRetouch is an app made specifically for this purpose. It’s super easy to step backward if you’re not happy with the results so you can easily get the perfect image.

*This app is available for $1.99 for IOS and Android.

12. Mextures

Mextures is a great app for applying textures, light leaks or a range of other effects. Create the moodiest of images for a unique Instagram look using this app. Combine and blend different effects for the most personalized editing look. If you’re feeling uninspired you can browse formulas from other Mextures users as well!

13. Lens Distortions

Lens Distortions is one of the best apps for adding light and weather effects, though many other apps offer these editing effects. From sunlight and rain to lens flares, you can adjust aspects such as opacity, color, and contrast for a bold or understated look. Personally, I am a believer of less is more, but whatever floats your boat.

14. GoCam

GoCam is the ultimate selfie without a selfie look app. This ingenious app uses technology that recognizes your body movement and snaps a photo at the exact perfect moment to get a selfie that doesn’t even look like a selfie. Goodbye using your arm or a timer!

*This app is available for free for IOS.

15. FaceTune

FaceTune is the ultimate blemish free editing app. To guarantee you always look your best, use FaceTune to get rid of fine lines, wrinkles and all blemishes in any photo before you upload to social media.
